UNSW Diversity Champions Expression of Interest

Expressions of Interest are now open for 15 UNSW Diversity Champions to work closely with the Division of Equity Diversity and Inclusion to champion key portfolio areas of inclusion and diversity at UNSW:

  • Cultural Diversity (3)
  • Gender Equity (3)
  • Disability (3)
  • Parents and Families (3)
  • LGBTIQ+ / Ally Network (3)

The UNSW Diversity Champion role is a two-year leadership position. The successful applicants will champion UNSW’s equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) strategy, and will therefore have opportunities to access and influence the University’s most senior leaders, including members of UNSW’s EDI Board.

How UNSW will support the UNSW Diversity Champions

UNSW Diversity Champion roles do not attract additional remuneration, however the Division of EDI will support successful applicants to have their contribution acknowledged and recognised.

The successful applicant will work closely with the Division of EDI and especially the D&I team. There may be access to limited funding for agreed EDI projects.

 Responsibilities of UNSW Diversity Champions

  • Serve a two-year term as a UNSW Diversity Champion (April 2021 to April 2023)
  • Provide leadership and direction to a Staff or Staff and Student Network, administrated via Teams, to draw together across the university communities those staff (and in some cases staff and students) who wish to participate in an informal, vibrant and inclusive community-building space
  • Participate in formal and informal communications regarding initiatives and events in portfolio area to promote the portfolio and its intersections, and be a visible advocate for Diversity and Inclusion at UNSW
  • Cascade key information and opportunities to their Network
  • Represent their portfolio area on an as needed basis at governance fora such as EDI Board, Senior Leadership Team, Senior Leadership Forum, Faculty or Divisional EDI Committees, Steering Committees and so on
  • Mentor incoming diversity champions for a period of time, after term completion
  • Agree to be contactable to members of their Network and broader university community to receive and communicate concerns or other feedback
  • Work closely with EDI to align portfolio objectives including regular meetings with all Champions to ensure intersectionality; and to discuss and share progress with the DVC-EDI
  • Participate in broader Network activities as far as possible
  • Provide thought advocacy and advice on university policies, procedures and processes
  • Familiarise themselves with the University EDI Policy, the prevention of and response to sexual misconduct policy and strategy, the staff and the student codes of conduct, and to conduct themselves in accordance with those policies and codes at all times.

The estimated time commitment required of Diversity Champions is up to 12 meetings per year plus participation in projects of interest. Having three Champions per portfolio will reduce the load.

Selection Criteria

  • Experience and/or interest in driving equity diversity and inclusion at UNSW.
  • Lived experience and expertise in the portfolio area, either at UNSW or elsewhere.
  • Capacity and desire to engage, influence and champion a strong diversity and inclusion agenda within UNSW, working closely with EDI and broadly with UNSW leaders, managers, academic and professional staff and students.
Which portfolio are you applying for? You may apply for more than one, although please note in your narrative which portfolio is your priority (Champions do not hold dual roles):
